Ballr NRL SuperCoach podcast wrap: Round 14 review

The Ballr podcast crew of Jono & Matt broke down everything you need to know heading into Round 15.

As the NRL SuperCoach season hits its most challenging stretch, Round 14 TLT has arrived with injury carnage, Origin disruption, and the dreaded bye coverage puzzle sending coaches into panic mode.

The Ballr NRL SuperCoach podcast crew of Jono and Matt broke down everything you need to know.

The Bye Coverage Crisis Hitting SuperCoach Teams

The biggest theme this week is the brutal reality facing coaches: most squads simply won't reach 13 on-field players for Round 15.

With key performers missing through Origin and injury and Round 15 teams like the Warriors, Eels, Roosters and Broncos offering limited viable coverage options, coaches are being forced to prioritise quality over quantity.

The Trade Landscape: How Many Should You Burn?

With most coaches sitting on around 19–20 remaining trades at the midway point of the season, burning five or six trades in a fortnight to hit 13 players is a dangerous gamble.

That leaves just 1.25 trades per week for the run home, and more bye carnage looms in Round 18.

The smarter play is targeting players who can anchor your final squad — think Mark Nawaqanitawase (on Reserves on the Round 14 team list in a bid to return from ankle injury, good Roosters bye coverage) — rather than reactive buys like Jarrod Croker, who can't be held to season's end.

Reece Walsh and the Origin Effect

The allure of Reece Walsh proved too strong for many coaches — including the number one overall — but his Round 14 game against the Titans is now crucial to justify the buy.

Walsh's increasingly likely Origin call-up makes him a risk for Round 15, reinforcing the danger of chasing those on the cusp at this time of year.

Use Ballr projections to weigh his upside against the break-even before lockout.

Key Player Verdicts This Week

  • Nicho Hynes — Hold camp wins this week. An easy sell exit point exists if he misses Round 15, and his absence could free up cash for the likes of Jayden Campbell.
  • Dylan Lucas is a must-watchlist with a break-even of just 46 — still very gettable.
  • Trey Mooney, meanwhile, looks expendable with a break-even of 103 and no Round 15 appearance, with the most popular trade of the week being Mooney to Terrell May.
  • Oliver Pascoe is the Ballr projection's top hooker this week at 70 points — a strong start if you need to move off Blayke Brailey.
