NRL SuperCoach bye rounds: How to navigate NRL 2026 byes | Ballr

Navigating byes is a key to success in NRL SuperCoach each year. Here’s everything you need to know.

Navigating byes is one of the biggest challenges in NRL SuperCoach. Every NRL team has three byes during the season, with at least one team not playing each week.

With 17 NRL teams in 2026 and only 27 rounds, this means some rounds have multiple teams on a bye. These are concentrated on six of the eight rounds between NRL Round 12 and NRL Round 19, which are related to the 2026 State of Origin series.

Coaches who prepare properly during the Origin bye period can gain a huge edge in overall rankings and head-to-head leagues, while poor planning can quickly derail a season.

This guide explains how NRL byes work, how they impact your SuperCoach team and the strategies to consider throughout the season.

NRL SuperCoach bye strategy: Why is it important?

Byes create several challenges in NRL SuperCoach, with the absence of premium players leaving your team short on scoring potential.

Coaches often burn trades trying to cover short-term absences. Poor bye management can:

  • Damage long-term team structure
  • Leave insufficient trades for injuries and player restings later in the season
  • Force sideways trades between premium players

Bye strategy is especially important during the State of Origin period, when the NRL draw schedules several teams on bye at once to help clubs manage player absences.

NRL SuperCoach bye planning: What is a ‘major’ bye and ‘minor’ bye round?

The 2026 NRL draw has multiple teams on bye in Round 12, 13, 15, 16, 18 and 19. These rounds are commonly split into:

  • Major bye rounds — Seven (7) teams on bye, with only five (5) fixtures taking place. Only 13 players count in your team’s score in major bye rounds, otherwise known as ‘Best 13’ scoring. In 2026, this includes Round 12, 15 and 18. Players selected for State of Origin are not permitted to play for their NRL team in these rounds.

  • Minor bye rounds aka ‘mini-byes’ — Three (3) teams on bye, with seven (7) fixtures taking place. Regular scoring rules apply in these rounds. In 2026, this includes Round 13, 16 and 19.

During this period, squad depth and planning become critical, with the added challenge of needing to anticipate which players will be selected for the NSW Blues or Queensland Maroons during the State of Origin series.

NRL SuperCoach bye planning: Risks to consider

Overloading one team

Stacking too many players from one NRL club becomes dangerous due to byes. If several players from the same team miss a round simultaneously, you could be forced to play sub-optimal options or be unable to field enough scoring players.

State of Origin selection

State of Origin stars can be valuable season-long, but they can equally become difficult to manage during the bye period. Coaches need to balance:

  • Premium scoring potential
  • Squad availability
  • Rest and reduced workload risks, especially in minor bye rounds
  • Trade management

Using too many trades to secure a high score in one bye round often creates bigger problems later in the season.

The best SuperCoach coaches manage byes without sacrificing long-term structure.

NRL SuperCoach bye tip: Track bye schedules early

Counting the numbers: Major bye rounds (Round 12, 15 & 18)

Players who play during major bye rounds can become significantly more valuable. These players can help your team maintain NRL SuperCoach scoring output and reduce reliance on trades.

In major bye rounds, which have “Best 13” scoring, quality matters more than depth. Rather than chasing 17 active players, prioritise reliable scorers, high-ceiling captaincy options and players with increased roles due to State of Origin players being unavailable.

However, it is important to note that three of the 10 teams who participate in major bye rounds will miss the subsequent minor bye round that follows.

Counting the numbers: Minor bye rounds (Round 13, 16 & 19)

Minor bye rounds might sound straightforward, but they can be deceiving and present unexpected challenges for NRL SuperCoach.

Three (3) teams have byes in minor bye rounds, but regular “Best 17” scoring rules apply. However, those three teams will be teams that participated in the preceding major bye round. The biggest challenge in these rounds is assessing whether the NSW and Queensland representatives you retain in your squad back up from State of Origin.

Top tip: Players who are scheduled to play on Friday after State of Origin may be less likely to play than those who play on the Sunday. This is where following the late mail is critical.

If the State of Origin representative in your team is on a bye in a minor bye round, that means your player misses two consecutive rounds.

Consider the case of Latrell Mitchell.

In 2026, the Rabbitohs have byes in two major bye rounds – Round 13 and Round 16. Rabbitohs centre Latrell Mitchell is one of the most popular players in NRL SuperCoach and is likely to play each game in the State of Origin series, meaning he will not be available to play NRL in rounds 12 (Origin), 13 (bye), 15 (Origin), 16 (bye) and 18 (Origin).

Playing only two rounds out of seven in that stretch could make him someone you need to trade out of your team in that period.

Summary

Over the NRL SuperCoach bye period, most teams will miss a major or minor bye round.

To save trades in this period, you could target teams with the fewest byes in this time.

In 2026, the teams with the most participation in rounds 12-19 are the Wests Tigers and the Dolphins, who play seven of the eight rounds.

NRL SuperCoach bye strategy for Overall rank

For overall players, the bye period is often season-defining. The best strategy is usually to:

  • Plan several rounds early
  • Build towards strong bye coverage in rounds 12-19
  • Balance your team to ensure you can field a minimum of 13 players in major bye rounds and a full 17 scoring players in minor bye rounds
  • Balance SuperCoach-friendly Origin stars with bye-friendly players
  • Target teams that have their second bye in Round 12

Coaches targeting overall rank should treat the bye period as a major opportunity to gain points on the competition.

NRL SuperCoach bye strategy for head-to-head leagues

Head-to-head players can approach byes differently. Many of these coaches:

  • Prioritise winning key matchup weeks
  • Sacrifice some bye rounds strategically
  • Focus more heavily on finals preparation

Many head-to-head leagues do not have fixtures taking place in the major bye rounds, which flips the script on NRL SuperCoach strategy.

While overall-focused coaches try to maximise major bye rounds, head-to-head coaches may choose to target players in teams that do not play in major bye rounds – and avoid players who miss minor bye rounds – in the bye period.

NRL SuperCoach head-to-head finals: Beware of byes

If you are an NRL SuperCoach coach focused on head-to-head matchups and look set to play finals, congratulations! The NRL SuperCoach head-to-head finals take place in Round 23, Round 24, Round 25 and Round 26 (grand final) in 2026.

Like every week, there are byes to navigate, but depending on your ladder position you risk being eliminated from your league finals if you carry too many players with byes in those rounds.

Wests Tigers – who have one of the best bye period schedules – miss Round 23. The highly SuperCoach relevant Storm have a bye in Round 24, while the Cowboys have a bye in Round 25, which is an elimination week in every league.

The Raiders miss the big one – the grand final – in Round 26, so you need to save trades if you have Raiders in your team.

Interestingly, the Knights have a bye in Round 27, which is not part of head-to-head leagues, while they also miss two major bye rounds (12 & 15).

This effectively means, in most Classic leagues and some Draft leagues (depending on your league settings), Knights players do not miss a game for head-to-head players due to byes, so you can afford to have as many of them in your squad as you like.
